Central Catholic pounced on a lethargic Generals team a built a three goal lead well into the second period. The Fighting Irish out shot and out hustled AW and had visions of a mild upset. The Generals finally turned things around with a Kevin Hoyle goal at 12:47 of the second period on a rebound of a Jake Bogdan shot from the point. Then Mike Kaptur, playing with Hoyle and Zach Ulrich scored 2 third period goals to tie the game with 2:58 remaining in regulation. Ulrich then took a pass from Hoyle, who had 3 assists in the game, and from one knee slammed home the lead goal. The most unusual goal of the season tied the game for Central with 5 seconds remaining to play. CCHS carried the play into the Generals zone and had the puck deflect off the netting above the glass which should require a stop in play. Somehow all three officials did not see it while both Head Coaches saw it and acknowledged the deflection off the neting and then hitting the ceiling. Almost everyone else hesitated expecting a whistle to stop play. Justin Bain hearing no whistle continued playing and when the puck practically landed at his feet, stuffed it past Trent DeLong. The two teams played through a scoreless 5 minute overtime and then came the second shoot out in the NHC in two nights (Southview won over Bowling Green on Saturday). While Ulrich, Watkins and Barnes each scored in the shoot out, the star of the shoot was the AW goalie DeLong. He stopped three of four including the winning save against Tyler Toska. AW gets the win in the league and Central earned 1 point for a tie. |
